What is the Story of Your Voice?

Posted on November 8, 2009 at 9:22 AM

Growing up we hear many messages about our voices. Many are told they are tone deaf and can'tsing. Others are told they are too intense and should tone down. Some are told to keep family secrets or told they are too sensitive. All ofthese can translate into vocal

blocks and inhibit us from expressing our natural heritage as singers.

One woman was told by her brother that she sounded like a crow in a tincan. This stopped her from her natural love of singing for years. This woman became my apprentice and I taught her the simple technique of toning, of following the breath and allowing inner sounds to ride on the breath stream. This woman now gives sound healing sessions with body work on the Crow and Northern Cheyenne reservations in southern Montana. She has been given the right to sing native Crow songs, healing songs that come through dreams. She has found her voice and is no longer subject to the inhibiting messages that she internalized.

What messages were you given about your voice? What images do you have of your voice that you can transform?

Absolutely a fabulous website, Susan -- I actually burst into song for the first time in years, spontaneously harmonizing with "Oh Great Spirit," which our women's group used to sing many years ago. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you -- and keep up the good work.!

I have a cousin who is a professional singer, growing up noone else in the family was recognised as having a voice other than her. I had always resented her for stealing the spot light so to speak. Then when we all got older we all starteed to have our own lives and discovered other people liked to hear me sing. I learned to play guitar and now I sing all the time... Growing up in my family, if your werent the best at something then dont bother doing it. The best according to who? Now a mother of my own children are teaching them do what makes them feel good, being the best isnt important, whats important is doing what makes you happy!!!

Love this website!!!!

This is all very exciting - I look forward to hearing about workshops you do in or near the UK as that's where I'm based.
One thing is you might like to put the years with the dates on your workshop page - it is mostly not clear if the dates are upcoming or past or if the page is out-of-date or refers to 2010 or what.
Cheers!
